Distinguished and Famous people from Surfers Paradise
🌟 Karla Gilbert
Karla Gilbert’s surf lifesaving career included a long and successful association with Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. After beginning in nippers, she progressed to professional ironwoman racing as a teenager and accumulated major national and international titles. The sport combined swimming, board paddling, ski paddling and running, making versatility essential. Her recognition in sporting halls of fame reflects sustained excellence across that demanding combination. At Surfers Paradise, the local link is the club and beach where an internationally celebrated athlete represented her community.
🌟 Paula Stafford
Fashion designer Paula Stafford helped make the bikini part of Australian beach culture through her Gold Coast swimwear business. Her Tog Shop in Cavill Avenue placed the business in the heart of Surfers Paradise, while her designs reached customers further afield. Reversible swimwear was among the practical ideas associated with her work. Stafford’s story links the resort’s beach identity with design, manufacturing and entrepreneurship. The familiar holiday image of swimmers on the sand also had a business side: someone had to design, make and sell what they wore.
🎹 Peter Allen
Peter Allen went to Surfers Paradise looking for work in 1959 and met singer-guitarist Chris Bell. With help from Bell’s father, they formed the Allen Brothers, inspired by the Everly Brothers. Their debut was at the Grand Hotel in nearby Coolangatta, rather than Surfers Paradise, and television appearances soon brought a national audience. Allen’s later solo career produced songs including I Go to Rio and I Still Call Australia Home, along with an Academy Award shared with the other writers of Arthur’s Theme. The Surfers Paradise meeting was an early turning point, before the flamboyant performances and international recognition.
